What is M-Bus?

M-Bus, or Meter-Bus, is a wired bus system used for reading utility meters such as heat, water, gas and energy meters. It is practical where many low-data-rate devices must be connected reliably over cable.

Engineering summary

M-Bus is built around a master-controlled bus. Slave meters are connected in parallel to a two-wire medium and are queried by the master. This makes it useful for installations where periodic meter readout is more important than high throughput.

Low data rate

Low data rate

Meter data is usually small, so reliability and wiring economy matter more than speed.

Central control

Central control

The master controls communication and requests data from meters.

Cabled infrastructure

Cabled infrastructure

Useful in technical rooms, commercial buildings, industrial halls and metering cabinets.
